Our Beliefs
Our Mission
Friendship Baptist Church is an independent Baptist Church serving the Raleigh area since 1965.
The purpose and goal of Friendship Baptist Church is to magnify and glorify our Lord Jesus Christ, and to preach His gospel. It is our further purpose to teach the Word of God, to facilitate spiritual growth and maturity in the lives of God's people, and to provide a base for warm Christian fellowship.
We believe in the verbally inspirited and authoritative Scriptures, the Triune God, the substitutionary death of the Lord Jesus Christ, His bodily resurrection, and His coming again for His Church before the Tribulation period. We believe man is a sinner and can only have spiritual life through personal faith in Christ Jesus and His finished work.
What is a "Fundamental Independent Baptist" Church?
- "Fundamental" - we believe in the great historic doctrines of the Christian faith as found in God's perfect Book, the Bible. We also believe that we should separate ourselves from worldliness and apostasy.
- "Independent" - we do not take orders from any denominational heirarchy or convention. We have loose fellowship with other like-minded believers.
- "Baptist" - we identify with those believers who not only believe in the great historic doctrines of the Christian faith, but who practice baptistm by immersion, repudiate any notion of a state church, and adhere to the principle of soul liberty.
What We Believe In
As Baptist, there are several doctrines that we believe set us apart from the rest of the world. We have included them in an acronym so that it might help you to remember them.
We believe in
- Biblical Authority - 2 Timothy 3:16; Mark 7:9; Isaiah 8:20
- Autonomy of the local church - Acts 13:1-4; Philippians 4:15; 1 Thessalonians 1:8
- Priesthood of all believers - 1 Timothy 2:5; 1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:5,6
- Two ordinances: Believer's Baptism and The Lord's Supper - Matthew 28:19,20; Acts 2:41; 1 Corinthians 11:24,25
- Individual soul liberty - John 18:36; Acts 5:29
- Saved church membership - Acts 2:47; 5:13; 8:36,37
- Two offices: Pastor and Deacon - 1 Timothy 3:1,8; Titus 1:5
- Separation from the world and unto Christ - Romans 12:1,2; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Biblical Authority
2 Timothy 3:16 - All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
Mark 7:9 - And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
Isaiah 8:20 - To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
Autonomy of the Local Church
Acts 13:1-4 - Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for their work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus
Philippians 4:15 - Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.
1 Thessalonians 1:8 - For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak anything.
Priesthood of all Believers
1 Timothy 2:5 - For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1 Peter 2:9 - But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Revelation 1:5,6 - And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Two Ordinances: Baptism and The Lord's Supper
Matthew 28:19,20 - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Acts 2:41 - Then they that gladly received his words were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
1 Corinthians 11:24, 25 - And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
Individual Soul Liberty
John 18:36 - Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Acts 5:29 - Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
Saved Church Membership
Acts 2:47 - Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
Acts 5:13 - And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.
Acts 8:36,37 - And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Two Offices: Pastor and Deacon
1 Timothy 3:1 - This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
1 Timothy 3:8 - Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
Titus 1:5 - For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
Separation from the World unto Christ
Romans 12:1,2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 - Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
